What Do I Need To Start My Own Business

What do I need to start my own business is a question many people ask.  The most important thing that you need is a belief in yourself and determination to succeed that can't be struck down by people telling you that you won't make it.

If you have that kind of determination, then you need to choose a business that you can make work.  The business needs to be something that you can be passionate about and that has a market even in this recessionary economy.

You will need start up capital that is sufficiet to fund your business untill it is profitable.  If you can figure out how to keep costs low enough so that you are profitable from the beginning, you will have the highest chance of success.

Some people purchase franchises to minimize the risk inherrant in most startups.  A franchise has the benefit having products, systems and marketing methods that have been tested and perfected.  The downside to a franchise however is that it often costs more initially and there are ongoing franchise fees that you will have to pay for as long as you run the business (in most cases).

How you are going to advertise and market your business is often the "special sauce" that will determine whether you fail or succeed.  Marketing today is much different than it was even 5 years ago.  Most small businesses no longer get most of their business from traditional methods like yellow pages, print advertising and other media.

As an online marketing consultant, I am seeing new business start ups succeed and even excell while older established businesses struggle and go under.  The new businesses invariably have some online component to their marketing plan.

The internet is where you are probably going to what to get your business positioned if you want to get a steady stream of customers for your new venture.  You will need to gain a decent understanding of online marketing methods or hire a firm that specializes in this area if you want to market online.

Customer service is another area that you will need to have a firm grasp on from the very beginning of your new business launch.  Most customers today know that for most products and services, it is a buyer's market.  They are looking for true value in every dollar they spend.  If you can get in the mindset trying to constantly figure out how to give more value to the customer (perceived value is fine), then you will develop loyal, repeat and word of mouth customers.

What do I need to start my own business is a question that every new business owner should ask.  If you answer that question completely, you will have a good roadmap towards success in your new venture.
